When I moved to the Lower 48 from Alaska I was so thrilled to see them! Each year at my gallery on the coast of Maine we collected a caterpillar on Milkweed and placed it in a large glass hurricane jar, covering it with cheesecloth. We’d watch the process from the brightly striped caterpillar, to the metallic gold dotted chrysalis, to the beautiful rust red, black and white accented butterfly. Then after closing we’d take it to a field with lots of Milkweed and release it! We of course get them in New Mexico as they migrate to and from Mexico.
