Here’s my new Common Loon drawings with striking black & white feathers and the remarkable red eyes on a blue patterned water background. Giclee printed on a semi gloss photographic paper, 8” x 12”.
The inspiration: Common Loons are admittedly not seen very commonly in New Mexico. I’m sure it’s very special to see them on the bigger northern New Mexico lakes as they migrate through the area. Growing up in Alaska Loons were a wonderful highlight in my life. Mornings and evenings camping on a lake would include their beautiful yodeling calls. When I’d see them in our bay in Prince William Sound it didn’t matter how far from shore they were. They are so big it would a little bit shock you each time! I’m slowly drawing an Alaska collection and these two will be part of that. So far with my Snowy Owl, also an enormous bird weighing up to 5lbs. But prepare yourself because the Common Loon weighs from 5.5lbs up to nearly 18lbs! Unlike the Owl they have solid not hollow bones reducing buoyancy for dive hunting. Measurements: body length 26” to 36”, wingspan 50” to 55”!
